Five Signs That Your Tyres Need Replacing
Having tyres that are in good condition is essential to the safety and smooth running of your vehicle. Driving with good tyres can reduce the risk of hydroplaning (where a layer of water builds between your wheels and the road surface), air leaking, blowouts and poor grip. Sometimes, it is necessary to have one or more tyres replaced. Discover the five signs that your tyres need replacing.
Tread Depth
Your tyre tread must be a minimum of 1.6mm deep in order to comply with UK law. You should check your tyres’ tread depth more often when it gets down to 3mm and aim to replace them before the tread wears below 2mm. One way of telling that your tyre tread has worn to the legal limit is by looking at the tread wear indicators. These are moulded in the tread grooves. Once they sit flush with the surface of the tread, your tyre tread has worn to the legal limit and the tyres must be replaced.
Tears, Abrasions & Punctures
You should inspect your tyres regularly for signs that they might need replacing. Look out for uneven tread wear, objects stuck in the tyre (such as nails), tears, abrasions and damaged valve caps.
Age
Although there is no hard and fast rule on the longevity of a tyre, tyres over five years old should be thoroughly inspected annually by a professional. Tyres over 10 years old (including spare tyres) should be replaced as a precaution, even if they still appear to be in good condition.
Exposure to Heat, Sunlight & Rain
Tyres degrade as a result of exposure to heat, sunlight and rain. Be sure to check for cracks on the sidewalls of your tyres if your car is parked outside. If the cracking is severe, it is a good idea to get the tyres replaced.
Change in Conditions
You may use different tyres for summer and winter. If this is the case, it is a good idea to only use the correct set of tyres for the time of year in order to prevent excessive wear and damage to the tyres. Summer tyres should not be used in winter as they have very little grip on cold, wet, icy or snowy roads.
Furthermore, winter tyres are specially developed for use in temperatures of under 7 degrees Celsius, so they tend to get too hot and suffer from excessive wear in warmer temperatures.
